La Galería (2017)
Instalación sitio específico. Madera, acero galvanizado, tableros OSB y vidrio. 15.5 x 13.8 x 4 m.
Nota sobre el título: El término "Galería" opera aquí en su doble acepción espacial, remitiendo tanto al corredor o pasaje arquitectónico como al espacio de exhibición artística.
Esta instalación sitio específico consistió en un corredor cerrado de 50 metros construido a lo largo del perímetro de la sala de exhibición. A medida que los visitantes lo recorrían, ascendían gradualmente hacia un mirador central donde un ventanal de vidrio dejaba a la vista tanto la sala vacía como el camino que acababan de transitar, situando a los cuerpos simultáneamente dentro y fuera de la estructura. Al alterar las vías de acceso, la intervención aísla la sala vacía, utilizando una secuencia espacial rígida para exponer cómo el contenedor institucional regula el acto de mirar.

Es habitual que una galería de arte opere, en cada caso, no solo como el espacio de custodia y exhibición de arte, sino también como marco de recomendación de las obras que en su interior comparecen. Estas, albergadas por la institución artística, y ya por el hecho de haber llegado hasta allí, parecen señalar implícitamente las credenciales que anticipan su valor para el espectador que visita la muestra. Pues bien, en “La Galería” la artista María Gabler ha invertido el sentido de esta operación: ahora es en cierto modo el arte –más precisamente la idea de arte y su voluntad de contemporaneidad– lo que actúa como aparato de recomendación y lectura de la galería en la concreta materialidad de su espacio.

Note on translation: The Spanish title "La Galería" plays on a double meaning, referencing both an architectural corridor (gallery/passageway) and an art venue (art gallery).
This site-specific installation consisted of a 50-meter enclosed corridor constructed along the perimeter of the exhibition space. As visitors traversed it, they gradually ascended to a central viewpoint where a glass wall exposed the empty room and the path they had just walked, placing bodies simultaneously inside and outside the structure. By altering the access routes, the intervention isolates the empty room, using a rigid spatial sequence to study how the institutional container regulates the act of viewing.

Typically, the art gallery operates not just as a space for storing and exhibiting works of art but also as a framework for recommending the works on display inside it. Because these works are housed by the art institution, the fact of having made it to such a place, in a sense, implicitly suggests certain credentials that will determine the value ascribed them by the viewers who visit the show. With that in mind, artist María Gabler has inverted the sense or logic of this operation in La Galería (The gallery). Now, it is art —or, more precisely, the idea of art and its quest for contemporaneity— that will act as the mechanism of recommendation and interpretation of the gallery in the concrete materiality of its space.
